Did You Know?

Coral reefs are home to thousands of different animals and plants. They are one of the most biodiverse ecosystems (many animals and plants in the environment) in the world and are an important part of a healthy planet. Tropical rainforests, mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs are all connected.

We will teach you what a coral reef is, about some of the thousands of different plants and animals living in this special environment, how the four different environments: coral reefs, rainforests, mangroves and seagrass beds are related. You will also learn about threats to the reef and what we can do to prevent more damage so that the reefs will still be there for future generations.

Mamanuca Environment Society

MES is an organisation established with the aim to protect the Mamanuca Islands marine and terrestrial environment. It was formed with the support from tourism operators and local village communities in the area. MES conducts educational programs with everyone in the region on how to conserve and protect the environment for future generations.

Our Aims are:

  • To advise local communities and tourism operators on how to become more responsible for their environmental activities.
  • To educate and raise awareness to both local communities and tourism operators about the importance of protecting the environment in their area.
  • To start action towards making the region sustainable in tourism, and other activities that may affect the reef.
